Laton Community Event - Friday Night Jam

The historic Laton United Methodist Church, 6381 De Woody, Laton, California, in Fresno County, wants a bit of a face lift.

Fresno District Missionary and Church Extension Society is seeking UM Volunteers in Mission teams to work along side Laton residents to remove the existing exterior paint and paint the exterior walls of the Laton United Methodist Church this spring and summer, starting April 2009.  Teams, whether for the weekend or mid-week, will be welcome, until the approximately 5,000 square foot project is completed.  Scaffolding, lift equipment and paint will be supplied, plus a couple of home-cooked Saturday evening meals!

A focal point for community events, the Laton church building provides space for community “Movie Night”, clothing exchange bank, and spill over space for youth and children’s activities organized by the Neighborhood Activity Center across the street.  Fresno District leaders and local United Methodists of the Hanford UMC see that the building is an essential mission outpost in the Laton community, even though a UMC congregation is not currently active there.  They hope that the current mission and outreach efforts might lead to development of a congregation in the pre-dominantly Hispanic community.  The presence of UMVIM teams will be a witness to United Methodist’s desire to share God’s Love by their service and actions!

Any pastor or UMVIM team leader interested in details about the project’s task, tools volunteers should bring, lists of local events, entertainment, housing and food available locally should check out our website listing of UMVIM projects sponsored by the California-Nevada conference at www.cnumcvim.org.  Additional information is available through the UMVIM office, 916-374-1582, umvim@calnevumc.org or from Hanford UMC, during church office hours of 9-12 weekdays, 559-584-4075, or Jim Gregory, local project manager 559-584-0327 evenings.  Jim’s email address is: jgregory5@earthlink.net.
